While catching up on emails, I opened a message from Ohio Northern University and found this monstrosity:
I have a few things to say about this. I realize that a student probably designed this graphic and so I am going to try to be nice.
This design did not motivate me to give online to ONU. It motivated me to close the email as fast as fucking possible, before spinning, grinning Klondike heads haunted my dreams.
Nice idea adding vectors and organic curls. Those are very popular right now. Unfortunately, vectors and organic curls cannot make up for the horror of a giant beckoning mascot or the condescending self-righteousness of suggesting that I will be helping the environment by allowing Ohio Northern to withdraw funds directly from my bank account.
When ONU does send an email motivating me to donate money, I will be sure to post about it. It will have to be an incredibly clever marketing strategy. I can’t imagine what they could say to convince me to give up any more dough than the obscene amount I’m already paying to Sallie Mae for the next 20+ years.
All criticisms aside, Ohio Northern University was a great college and I’m thankful for the education they provided. But it was an education I had to purchase, and I’m still paying on it, and I’m not about to donate on the side.
I suggest researching the alumni and only hitting up those students who are NOT still in debt with education loans.
